About the PGA Tour

Since 1968, when it broke off from being the tournament players’ division of the PGA of America, the PGA Tour has become one of the top spectator sports in the United States, thanks to the play of such greats as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, and Tiger Woods.

The PGA Tour organization oversees three series for touring professional golfers: the PGA Tour, the Champions Tour (formerly the Seniors Tour, for players 50 years of age and older), and the Nationwide Tour, a sort of “minor league” tour for second-level players. Winning players can earn exemptions from having to qualify for a PGA Tour event; the top 125 money winners each year also receive a tour card for the following season, and the top 20 money winners from the Nationwide Tour receive regular PGA Tour rights.

There is a distinct pattern to the tournament schedule for the PGA Tour as well: the opening late-winter events are in Hawaii and along the West Coast; then, in the early spring, moves to the Southeast. As spring warms up and moves into summer, the action moves north to the Midwest and Northeast, then returns to southern venues in the mid-autumn.
